Why PALS: Joy, Excitement & Inclusivity

We often ask members of our PALS Family "Why PALS?" to learn how our mission has impacted their lives. This month, we hear from Mara Smith, who serves as the Secretary for the PALS Board of Directors.

Dear PALS Family,

I first heard about PALS when my friend Timbo Shriver reached out to tell me about his experience with this incredible organization. I was immediately drawn to the PALS mission and community and met with Jenni to learn how I could get more involved. Last year, I had the opportunity to join the PALS Board of Directors and I recently assumed the role of Secretary on the Board of Directors.

In July, I had my first in-person PALS camp experience at PALS Philadelphia 2 Arrival at Cabrini University. The energy was contagious! For many participants, this was the first time attending a PALS program since 2019 and everyone could feel the joy and excitement of being back at camp. I definitely gained a better understanding of the impact of PALS - not just during camp week but throughout the entire year.

Serving on the PALS Board has inspired me to continue to advocate for access and inclusivity wherever I go. On the Board of Directors, I get to work with some of the brightest, kindest individuals I know to honor the PALS mission, support the growth of PALS, and find opportunities to bring the PALS community together.

When I think about my “Why PALS,” I turn to my core belief that everyone should have access to places and spaces that allow them to build community and grow as individuals through joyful experiences. As a Board Member, I get to play a small role in providing this through the PALS summer programs for people with and without Down syndrome.

It is a privilege to be a part of PALS and I aim to bring the PALS joy, excitement, and inclusivity to every part of my life.
