At PALS, we have heard the sentiment many times before- "I wouldn't be where I am today without my summers at PALS," or "the trajectory of my career completely shifted after spending a week at PALS," or "the memories from PALS are some of the best of my life." But what is it about a week-long experience at PALS that fulfills our mission of changing attitudes, transforming lives, and inspiring a world of belonging? Many of us enter thinking we are here to volunteer and change lives, and likely we will, but we leave with far more.
When I arrived at camp this past season, I was brand new to PALS. I'm sure the jitters I felt were similar to that of a new Peer! But I was met with the experience of a lifetime. Maybe you are reading this and are on the fence about joining us this summer as a Peer. Let's be frank - it is a huge leap of courage to take! But what you put in, you will get out of the experience tenfold. Here is what you can expect to take away from being a Peer at PALS!
Gain transferable skills.
Communication, team-building, leadership, adaptability, collaboration - PALS Peers are able to develop all of these skills (and more!) during Camp. Regardless of your career path, these skills will have a measurable impact on your success in the workforce. Volunteers learn inclusive and appropriate language, patience and understanding, and how to build spaces and communities where all individuals feel welcome and accepted.
Add to your resume.
Like a work placement or internship, an immersive volunteer experience with PALS could be a compelling addition to your resume. This is a great opportunity to showcase your skills and ability while having the time of your life!
Build lifelong friendships.
Summer camp is an unforgettable experience, and many of our PALS Peers remain close friends with their Partners and Peers from their camp. These friendships blossom and grow well beyond the camp experience. Additionally, many of our Peers have opportunities to network with the expansive PALS Family. Peers gain access to a vast network that may aid in the next endeavor.
Earn up to 100 service hours.
By joining a week-long program, Peers have the opportunity to earn up to 100 volunteer service hours. PALS Staff can provide an official letter to verify the time served and references as needed.
PALS would not be possible without the dedication of our volunteers, and we are committed to investing our time, energy, and resources back into our community. Our goal is to equip and empower volunteers with new skills and a boost of confidence, whether that means accelerating your career path, growing your personal and professional network, or helping you learn something new. So this summer, grab a friend and get involved!
