The Congratulations Project: A Witness to the Impact

The Congratulations Project is a core component of the mission of PALS as we continue to create a more inclusive world. When a new family receives the words of hope and joy from a participant at PALS, we shift the narrative of the Down syndrome diagnosis from “I’m sorry” to “Congratulations”. This contributes to our goal of building a world of belonging and celebrating the value of every individual. This summer, we saw our mission come to light through a special Congratulations Project letter recipient and volunteer.

Having a child, there will always be ups and downs, but the letter gives hope for the future.
— Jimmie, PALS participant and letter recipient

Jimmie and his family received a Congratulations Project letter in 2019 after the birth of their child with Down syndrome. As a parent, he explained how meaningful the letter was from an adult with Down syndrome at PALS. Like many parents, he did not know what to expect during this overwhelming time of having a new baby. Jimmie said, “Having a child, there will always be ups and downs, but the letter gives hope for the future.” After learning about PALS through The Congratulations Project, Jimmie decided to join as a volunteer this summer.  He saw the hope he experienced in the letter while paired with Zach this summer at PALS Baltimore. After the program, Jimmie felt like he walked away from the weekend with more than just a friend. Zach showed Jimmie what PALS valued and how fun the experience could be.

Jimmie decided to volunteer at PALS after the birth of his daughter, Ilyn, and receiving an encouraging letter from The Congratulations Project.

Jimmie decided to volunteer at PALS after the birth of his daughter, Ilyn, and receiving an encouraging letter from The Congratulations Project.

Jimmie said, “PALS is not only for people with Down syndrome but for everyone to experience being inclusive, having motivation, team work, and volunteering.” The experience that once started with receiving a Congratulations Project letter came full circle after being paired with Zach and writing Congratulations Project letters together during the program.

While the  letter meant so much to Jimmie, his relationship with Zach and being at PALS gave him even more perspective on what the future holds for Baby Ilyn. As he said, “It was an eye opening experience to join PALS.” The PALS family continues to grow through The Congratulations Project. It’s during these moments when we really feel the impact of our mission. . We are so happy Jimmie received a Congratulations Project letter two years ago and was inspired to volunteer at PALS this past summer. Next, we can’t wait to see Baby Ilyn join us at PALS in 2031!
