Creating Safe, Inclusive, and Empowering Summer Camp Programs

Courtney Mickens

Program Development Manager

At PALS, we aim to create inclusive camp experiences for people with and without Down syndrome to form meaningful connections and build lifelong memories. Achieving this mission requires intentional efforts to foster a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for every participant, volunteer, and staff member. Through specialized training, thoughtful programming, and a commitment to continuous improvement, PALS has implemented several strategies to ensure that all participants and volunteers feel safe and included. Here’s how we do it!

Training for Volunteers and Staff One of the foundational pillars of PALS’ approach to safety is the comprehensive training provided to all volunteers and staff. We believe that a well-prepared team is essential to creating an environment that prioritizes inclusion and well-being.

As soon as we dropped our son off at Cabrini University we knew he was in safe hands. His partner was an amazing young man. He had the same energy that he had when we dropped him off.

  • Volunteer Screenings and Background Checks We conduct seasonal criminal background checks and volunteer screenings to maintain a high standard of safety and accountability for everyone involved.

  • PALS University Our online learning platform helps volunteer leaders build their leadership skills and deepen their understanding of our mission and values. Modules include Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, caring for others, and communication—key to creating an inclusive camp environment.

  • CampSafe® Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Training All volunteer leaders and staff complete CampSafe® training to recognize, prevent, and respond to signs of abuse, ensuring a safe, supportive environment.

  • On-Site Training Before camp begins, volunteers and staff participate in on-site training to reinforce core values and prepare for real-world scenarios.

Inclusive Programming At the heart of PALS success is our unique programming model, which prioritizes meaningful relationships and inclusive activities.

  • Engaging Local Down Syndrome Organization We work with local organizations through our program hubs to connect with families who could benefit from PALS and explore financial aid opportunities (Interested in learning more about financial aid? Check out our Financial Aid blog).

  • One-to-One Pairing Model Our core model pairs each Partner with a Peer for the duration of camp, fostering genuine friendships and mutual learning. These pairings break down barriers and promote understanding in a way that feels natural and meaningful.

  • Inclusive Programming Activities Program Leads craft schedules that encourage participants to step out of their comfort zones and into their challenge zones. From meals to activities, everyone is encouraged to participate fully, creating an environment of connection and growth.

Each program hub reflects its local community, offering unique experiences that make every PALS program one-of-a-kind.

  • Self-Advocacy Our Self-Advocacy Committee empowers Partners to shape their camp experience by sharing ideas and feedback, ensuring their voices are heard throughout the planning process.

Our Commitment to Safety and Continuous Improvement Safety is a top priority at PALS. We have implemented several measures to ensure that our camps are safe for all participants and volunteers.

  • ACA Supports PALS is accredited by the American Camping Association, holding us to high standards of safety and well-being. We regularly review and update policies to meet ACA guidelines.

  • Closed-Loop Feedback & Surveys After each session, participants and volunteers complete post-program surveys. This feedback helps us improve future programming, ensuring everyone feels valued and supported.
