Celebrating Black History Month 2023

BY JENNI NEWBURY ROSS

PALS Co-Founder & Executive Director

Black History Month provides us with an additional opportunity to reflect on the diversity of our community and the value that comes from the many identities we all share. This month in particular is a time to honor the rich history, contributions, and experiences of Black Americans.  In our mission to inspire a world of belonging for all, celebrating diversity and inclusion becomes core to our work and impact as an organization. We learn best when we amplify each person’s experiences and perspectives. This past February we were able to take an opportunity to do just that.

In December, we contracted with Dr. Alexandra White as a consultant to evaluate and support our efforts around Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging. Dr. White hosts monthly training for PALS Staff while also working closely with PALS leadership to align our DEI work with our mission and strategic plan. These conversations have supported our team in thinking deeper about our impact and how to build a world of belonging.

Dr. White shared with us the podcast titled “Is It Okay for Companies to Capitalize on Heritage Month Celebrations?” where she discusses the importance of companies having authenticity, sincerity, and consistency when celebrating heritage months or identity recognition days. Amplifying voices in our community is key to these values and one way to celebrate Black History Month.

This past month, our focus on amplifying voices was brought to life through a series of focus groups conducted by Dr. White. Over the course of a week, Dr. White heard from small groups of diverse participants, families, and volunteers to understand perspectives and needs in our community. In addition to the three one-hour focus groups, she also conducted an online anonymous survey, and engaged in personal communication and outreach. We are so excited to begin reviewing this data and sharing more details next month on key action items and opportunities for growth.

We appreciate Dr. White for her leadership and expertise; and we are grateful to every individual who took time to share their perspective and give authentic feedback to PALS. This is how we grow and build communities that inspire a world of belonging. We are looking forward to continuing these conversations and growing our mission as we prepare for this summer.
