What to do in situations

Sometimes it can be hard to know what to do in particular situations. As always, we encourage you to go to your Leadership team for support & guidance. But, we also want to give you tools to handle situations on your own! Click below to see some questions to ask yourself when situations arise.

  • This should be the first question you ask yourself when considering what to do in a situation. If someone is NOT safe, that needs immediate attention and you should get a leader.

  • Oftentimes, there are things outside of a situation that are contributing to what is happening in the moment. Asking yourself this question and consider the things that could be at play will often lead to you asking the right questions or help you come up with the right next steps. You can use THIS PROMPT to help you think of some things that might be important to consider!

  • Every behavior (something we do) has a reason WHY! The actions we take and the things we say are for a reason. Take a moment to consider what this person wants. You can even ask them!

    - Do they want attention (verbal, physical, social, etc.)?

    - Do they want a physical thing (person, item, location, etc.)?

    - Are they trying to get away from something (person, place, thing, etc.)?

If you can figure out what the person wants, you will be able to react more accurately!

  • Once you have considered things that might be contributing to the situation and what the person might want, now you can think about what you can do in the moment. This is where your relationship with the person is important!

    - Can you get them something?

    - Can you change something about the environment they are in?

    - Can you distract them or remind them of something to look forward to?

    - Can you find someone to help? Sometimes the best thing you can do in a situation is realize that you aren't the best person to fix it. That is a brave thing.

  • Taking a moment to think about what you can do after the situation is over is one of the ways to be a supportive friend. Following up with someone to check-in or making sure decisions that were made actually happen will not only make that person feel valued, but it will likely decrease the likelihood of the situation happening again.

Asking for help

We want you to know that you can ALWAYS ask for help. Below are 5 different ways you can get help when you need it at Camp.

    4. Call a Lead - you can find their number in the PALS App

    5. Write a note and give it to someone you trust
